I'm really on the fence on whether or not I include Kentucky in "The South". They don't fix grits correctly, they don't have boiled peanuts, they don't have (good) peaches, when you order tea at restaurants, they actually ASK if you want it sweet or un-sweet (if you're lucky enough to have a choice). And let me clear one thing up, Texas is NOT part of The South! From Southern Living to Paula Deen, from the glorious Carolina shore to cotton and tobacco fields, here's a little southern definition via a picture frame I have:
1- tea is sweet & accents are sweeter
2- summer starts in april (NOT true about KY- the high in may was in the 50s, back home, i was in lake in april)
3- mac n cheese is a vegetable
4- front porches are wide and words are long
5- pecan pie is a staple
6- y'all is the only proper noun
7- chicken is fried and biscuits come with gravy (KFC was started here, +1 pt for KY)
8- everything is darlin'
9- someone's heart is always being blessed
On that note, here are a few pictures of good ole southern food from where i come from! (right out of my parents' garden)
THE best pimento cheese
Tomatoes, peppers and peaches
boiled peanuts, of course!
What do you consider "The South"?
